Setting up a tank for Zebra Danios requires attention to both their natural needs and their energetic behavior. Zebra Danios are active swimmers and need plenty of open space, so a tank of at least 10 gallons is recommended, although larger tanks allow them to thrive even more. Since these fish are schooling species, it’s best to keep them in groups of at least five to reduce stress and promote natural behaviors. The water temperature should be kept between 18-24°C (64-75°F), with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. A good filtration system is also important to maintain water quality and mimic the gentle current of their natural habitat.

In terms of decor, live or artificial plants should be placed around the edges of the tank, leaving the center open for swimming. Hardy plants such as Java Fern or Anubias work well, and floating plants like Duckweed can add some natural shading. It’s also a good idea to include rocks or driftwood to create hiding places, but make sure they don’t overcrowd the tank, as Zebra Danios need space to move. Lighting should be moderate, as these fish don’t require intense light. Regular water changes and monitoring of water parameters will help ensure a healthy environment.
