Zebra Danio breeding tips

Breeding Zebra Danios can be a straightforward process, but there are a few key tips to ensure success. First, always set up a dedicated breeding tank, separate from the main aquarium. A 10-gallon tank is ideal, with a temperature of around 78°F (25°C) to encourage breeding. A fine substrate or spawning mat should cover the bottom of the tank, as Zebra Danios scatter their eggs, which can easily be eaten by the adults if not protected. Adding live plants like Java moss can provide additional hiding places for the eggs.

To prepare the fish for breeding, feed them a diet high in protein, such as live or frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. This will condition both the males and females for spawning. Place the fish in the breeding tank in the evening, as Zebra Danios often spawn early in the morning. Once the eggs are laid, promptly remove the adult fish to prevent them from eating the eggs. The eggs typically hatch within 48 to 72 hours. After hatching, feed the fry infusoria or commercially available fry food until they are large enough to eat baby brine shrimp.
