Sphynx Breed History

The Sphynx breed, known for its distinctive hairless appearance, has a fascinating history that began relatively recently. The origins of the Sphynx can be traced back to the 1960s when a domestic cat in Toronto, Canada, gave birth to a hairless kitten due to a natural genetic mutation. This kitten, named Prune, became the foundation of the Sphynx breed. Breeders recognized the unique appeal of these hairless cats and began selectively breeding them to establish a stable and healthy breed. Early breeding efforts involved crossing hairless cats with regular domestic cats to strengthen the gene pool and ensure the breed’s health and vitality.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the breed gained more attention, and breeders in North America and Europe worked to refine the Sphynx’s characteristics. They focused on enhancing the cat’s distinctive features, such as its muscular build, large ears, and almond-shaped eyes. Despite some initial challenges in breeding due to health concerns, the Sphynx was eventually recognized by major cat associations, including The International Cat Association (TICA) in 1985 and the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) in 2002.
