Red Squirrel reproduction

Red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) have a fascinating reproductive cycle that is closely tied to the availability of food and the conditions of their environment. Typically, red squirrels breed twice a year, with the first breeding season occurring in late winter to early spring and the second in late summer. Female red squirrels become sexually mature at about 10 to 12 months of age and are capable of producing one to two litters per year, depending on food availability and weather conditions.

A female red squirrel is in estrus for only one day, during which she may be pursued by multiple males. These males compete vigorously for the opportunity to mate, often engaging in chases through the treetops. After mating, the female takes on the sole responsibility of raising the young. She will give birth to a litter of about three to five kits after a gestation period of approximately 38 to 39 days. The young are born blind, hairless, and entirely dependent on their mother for warmth and nutrition.

The mother squirrel nurses her kits for about 7 to 10 weeks, during which time they remain hidden in the safety of the drey, the nest she has constructed. By the time they are weaned, the young squirrels are fully furred and begin to explore outside the nest, learning to forage and fend for themselves. However, they typically remain near the nest for a few more weeks, gradually gaining independence.
