Rabbit Dachshund

The Rabbit Dachshund, also known as the Kaninchen Dachshund, is a smaller and more agile variant of the standard Dachshund, specifically bred in Germany for hunting small game like rabbits. Weighing typically between 7 to 9 pounds (3 to 4 kilograms), this breed is characterized by its long body, short legs, and a keen sense of smell, all traits that make it an excellent hunter. Despite their small size, Rabbit Dachshunds are known for their bold and spirited nature. They are intelligent, curious, and often exhibit a strong independent streak, which can make training both a rewarding and challenging experience.

Rabbit Dachshunds come in three coat types: smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired, each with specific grooming needs. Smooth-coated Dachshunds require minimal grooming, while wirehaired ones need regular brushing and occasional hand-stripping to maintain their coat texture. Longhaired Rabbit Dachshunds require more frequent grooming to prevent tangles and matting. Regardless of coat type, all Rabbit Dachshunds need regular exercise to stay healthy and to prevent obesity, which can lead to back problems like Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). Providing mental stimulation through games and scent-based activities is also beneficial, as it taps into their natural instincts and keeps them engaged.
