Longhaired Dachshund

The Longhaired Dachshund is a striking variation of the Dachshund breed, known for its sleek, flowing coat that gives it a distinctive and elegant appearance. Originally bred in Germany, Longhaired Dachshunds were developed by crossing smooth-coated Dachshunds with spaniels to create a breed with a longer, silkier coat. This coat type not only adds to their charm but also provides some protection in colder weather, making them well-suited for hunting in different climates.

Longhaired Dachshunds are known for their friendly and affectionate nature. Compared to their smooth and wirehaired counterparts, they are often considered to have a slightly more laid-back and gentle temperament, though they still retain the typical Dachshund traits of courage, determination, and a strong prey drive. These dogs are intelligent and eager to please, which can make training a positive experience, especially when using reward-based methods. They need to be brushed several times a week to prevent tangles and mats, especially in areas where the hair is longer, such as the ears, chest, and underbelly. Regular bathing and trimming of the hair around the paws and ears are also important to maintain their neat appearance. Additionally, Longhaired Dachshunds need the same care as other Dachshunds regarding weight management and exercise to prevent back problems, particularly Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD).
