Kakariki Cage Setup

Setting up a cage for a Kakariki, a small and energetic parrot from New Zealand, requires careful consideration of their unique needs. These birds are highly active and curious, so their cage should be spacious enough to allow plenty of room for flying and exploring. A minimum cage size of 100 cm in length, 50 cm in width, and 50 cm in height is recommended, but bigger is always better. Horizontal bars are ideal as they provide opportunities for climbing, which Kakarikis enjoy. The cage should be made of safe, durable materials, with bar spacing no more than 1.5 cm to prevent injury.

Inside the cage, provide a variety of perches at different heights and materials, such as wood and rope, to keep their feet healthy and engaged. Additionally, include plenty of toys that cater to their natural behaviors like foraging and chewing. Swing toys, ladders, and puzzle feeders can help keep them mentally stimulated. A separate area for food and water is essential, and these should be kept clean and refreshed daily. A shallow dish of water or a bird bath should be provided as Kakarikis love to bathe regularly.
