Eurasian Squirrel distribution

The Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), commonly referred to simply as the Eurasian squirrel, is widely distributed across Europe and northern Asia. Its range extends from the British Isles, through mainland Europe, and across Russia to the Pacific coast, including parts of northern China and Korea. This species thrives in a variety of forested habitats, from dense coniferous forests in the north to mixed and broadleaf forests further south.

In Europe, the Eurasian squirrel is most commonly found in wooded areas with a significant presence of coniferous trees, which provide a stable food source, particularly during the winter months. However, their populations have been in decline in some parts of Western Europe, notably in the UK and Italy, due to competition with the invasive Eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), which was introduced from North America. This competition has led to the displacement of the native red squirrels in many areas, as the gray squirrels are more adaptable and can carry the squirrelpox virus, which is deadly to red squirrels.

To help protect and support Eurasian squirrel populations, conservation efforts focus on habitat preservation, including the maintenance of diverse forest ecosystems. In regions where the red squirrel is at risk, measures such as controlling the spread of gray squirrels and planting native tree species are crucial for their survival. Public awareness and community engagement are also important, as these efforts can contribute to the preservation of this iconic species in its natural habitat.
