Bottom-dwelling fish

Bottom-dwelling fish are an essential addition to many aquariums, as they help keep the tank clean by scavenging for food that falls to the substrate. These fish typically prefer the lower levels of the tank, where they search for uneaten food, algae, and other debris. One of the most popular bottom-dwellers is the Corydoras catfish, known for its peaceful nature and small size. Corydoras are social creatures and thrive in groups, making them ideal for community tanks. Another popular choice for bottom-dwelling fish is the Plecostomus, often referred to as “Pleco.” These fish are excellent at controlling algae, and they can grow quite large, so it’s important to ensure they have enough space as they mature. Smaller varieties, like the Bristlenose Pleco, are well-suited for smaller tanks and are equally effective at keeping the tank clean. For those with a sand substrate, Kuhli Loaches are an interesting option. These eel-like fish burrow into the sand and are active mostly at night, adding a unique dynamic to your aquarium. When keeping bottom-dwelling fish, it’s important to provide them with a suitable environment, including smooth substrates to prevent injury, and plenty of hiding spots, like caves or dense plants, where they can retreat.
