The Black Rat (Rattus rattus), also known as the roof rat or ship rat, is a small, agile rodent known for its adaptability and widespread presence in various environments. Typically, black rats have a sleek body covered in dark brown to black fur, with a lighter-colored belly. They are smaller and more slender than their relative, the brown rat, usually measuring about 16 to 24 cm (6 to 9.5 inches) in body length, with an additional 19 to 25 cm (7.5 to 10 inches) for the tail. This long, scaly tail is a distinctive feature, often longer than the rat’s body itself, aiding in their exceptional balance and climbing abilities.

Black rats are highly adaptable, thriving in urban, suburban, and rural environments. They are excellent climbers, often found in attics, roofs, and trees, which is why they are sometimes called roof rats. Omnivorous by nature, they have a diverse diet that includes fruits, grains, seeds, and occasionally small animals.
